“A dynamic Arirang within ‘Homage to Korea’”
[Yonhap news] Kim Young-Hyun 2011-04-27

Interview with the music arranger Ji Pyeong-Gwon, music director.
“Arirang is known mostly as a sad melody. But I highlighted the dynamic and grandness of the song.”

We were able to interview music director Ji Pyeong-Gwon, the arranger of the music that was used in ‘Homage to Korea’, by phone.
“I have been consistently working to introduce our traditional music to the world.
Our music will be introduced all over the world because Yuna Kim used the newly arranged Arirang as her free skating music.”

Kim revealed her ‘Homage to Korea’ free program on the 26th (Moscow time). The 2011 ISU Moscow World Figure Skating Championships is her first competition in 13 months.
The music for ‘Homage to Korea’ uses the main melody of Arirang and other traditional Korean music.

The Arirang used by Kim was arranged by Ji and Robert Bennett, a well known composer.
Kim’s program uses much of the music and choreographer David Wilson incorporated traditional vocals in the middle of the program.

“The original is about 6 minutes long so it was shortened to about 4 minutes. Then David Wilson added the vocal part and the Gayageum part,” explained Ji.

The first 1 minutes of ‘Homage to Korea’ is the familiar melody of Arirang. Then it changes into a dynamic rhythm uplifting the whole arena.

“The dynamic part’s basic theme is actually Arirang.
The connecting part between the lyrical and dynamic was edited out so the change seems very dramatic, to the point that it seems like a totally different song,” explained Ji.

“It’s easy to think that Arirang is lagging but I wanted to use a dynamic melody to suggest the progressiveness of Korea.
That is why I arranged the ending Arirang part as grand as I could,” added Ji.

Ji, along with conductor Seo Hee-Tai, who is well known as the music director of the drama ‘Beethoven Virus’ is a member of the ‘Daul Project’,
a project that strives to globalize Korean culture.

Kim contacted Seo Hee-Tai, who had been the conductor of the live orchestra in Kim’s show in 2009, and said she was looking for Korean music.
Seo gave her the Arirang that Ji had arranged and it was used as her free skating theme.

“It’s an honor that my music has been used by a world class athlete’s program.
The last 10 years I have strived to introduce Korean music but thanks to Yuna Kim I have gotten bigger results than the effort I put in," said Ji

Ji has been working with drama sound tracks for the last 15 years.
Some of his works include ‘Full House’ , ‘Resurrection’, ‘Suspicious three brothers’.
His current work is the music of the period drama '짝패' (The Duo) which is being aired on MBC TV.
The soundtrack uses both traditional Korean music and Western orchestra music and the song '비연'(Sad lotus) is especially popular.

The original Arirang used in Kim’s ‘Homage to Korea’ (and also '비연'(Sad lotus)) will be available on online music sites after Kim’s free skating starting on May 1, 00:00AM.

Also with the original Arirang, Ji will also present another version, one with more Korean melodies incorporated in it.
