[2011 World Championships - Day 3] Video clip of Yuna Kim's interview after the official practice of FS program
[SBS] 2011-04-26

Q. It was your first open rehearsal of ‘Homage to Korea’, wasn’t it?

Yes. I think many people were looking forward to ‘Homage to Korea’, more than ‘Giselle’.
I think that people had high expectations about how I would express Korean music in figure skating.
So I was nervous and trained hard since there would be a lot of people watching.
I think my condition wasn’t that bad considering I took yesterday off. I’m pretty satisfied with my rehearsal.

Q. What did you focus on the most?

There are a lot of people around the world who watch figure skating. So I tried to share Arirang and other Korean music with them.
We also tried to make it as Korean as possible since there are so many people who can’t discern it from Japanese or Chinese music when they hear any kind of Asian music.

Q. What is the difference between ‘Homage to Korea’ and ‘Giselle’?

Well ‘Homage to Korea’ is not a character like ‘Giselle’. It’s like a thank you message to all the people who supported me.
I holds my deep thankfulness to my fans and all the Korean people.

Q. What is the key points in ‘Homage to Korea’?

I don’t think there really is a ‘key’ point that stands out.
I tried to express all the different music in the program since 4 minutes and 10 seconds is a long time.
But I think that the spiral, where there familiar Arirang melody is, would be the key point.

Q. What are your costumes like?

Hmmm… We thought a lot about how to incorporate traditional Koran style in a modern way.
I think it’s more of a modern style.
You’ll have to wait until the day of the competition. (laughs)

Q. Are there any changes in your technical elements?

The regulations no longer allow more than 2 double axels. I used to do 3, so my triple combination was reduced to one.
But there isn’t a radical change and we put in elements with that in consideration so I don’t think it will have a severe effect.

Q. How is your physical condition?

When I was in the U.S. preparing for Worlds in Japan, I had already been finishing up my preparations for conditioning my stamina.
The additional month gave me more preparation time to refine and build up my body.
So I don’t think there will be any problems.

Q. What does the final ending pose of ‘Homage to Korea’ mean?

Well it’s not exactly a Korean-like move but David said it means ‘to open up a new world’.
It is saying thank you and that I will open up my new world.

Q. What are the reactions about your music?

According to other skaters and their coaches they say their impression is that its moving and heart stirring rather than it being ‘Korean music’.
To people from other countries it will be unfamiliar so they will get to know traditional Korean music through the program.
Maybe it can lead to more skaters using Korean music and by that it may help make Korean music more familiar.

I felt a bit burdened because so many people were curious about my program.
I was worried that I would disappoint them when my program was revealed.

But after my rehearsal I asked how it was like and the feedback was good.
So I hope a lot of people like it as well.

Q. You had one mistake in the rehearsal.

Yes. But I don’t worry about it since falling during rehearsals is a normal thing. (laughs)
