Kim Yuna leaves for her first competition of the season, the Golden Spin of ZagrebIlgan Sports/Segye Ilbo | Kim Ji-Han/Park Tae-Hoon | 2013.12.03Kim Yuna left for Zagreb, Croatia for her ‘final rehearsal’ before the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games. The following is Kim’s question and answer session.Q: How do you feel now that you are leaving for a competition?▶Kim: I started the Olympic season late. So I tried to be more thorough. My main goal is perform well rather than being focused on results, because this is the first time skating to my new programs in competition. And I would also like to check the levels on details of my program.I was able to train more ease and a lighter heart because the Golden Spin is not as big as the Grand Prix Finals.Q: At the ‘Olympic D-100 Media Day’ you said that your physical condition was up to 70%. What about now?▶Kim: What I meant by 70%, was that my goal was to reach 100% by the Olympics.Even though I did have an injury I have been preparing for the Games since the last World championships ended.I think my condition is up to 80~90%.I need to increase my stamina further for the Olympics.Q: How do you feel starting off the Olympic season?▶Kim: Well it is the Olympic season and also my final season so I feel light hearted. To be frank, I am greedy about results because I have already achieved my dream of winning the Olympic gold medal. So I believe that I will be able to skate with my heart at ease. But right now I am trying to focus on this competition and not the Olympics.Q: Can you tell us about your choreography or jump layout or costumes?▶Kim: My new programs…..(long pause) I don’t know. (laughs) The jump layout is almost the same. And the costumes…will be revealed when the competition starts in Croatia.Q: Recently Mao Asada said that she was able to grow further because of you.▶Kim: I agree with her. We’ve been compared to each other since we were in juniors and there was a rivalry between us.However, I could not have become who I am today if Asada had not been there.Even though we would have liked to avoid each other, it was also motivating.I presume that this will be the Asada’s last season. We both have always trained hard and I hope that both of us can end our final season well without leaving any regrets.Q: How is far along are your programs?▶Kim: There are no problems because of my injury.Even though I did take some time off, it doesn’t mean that I forgot my programs so there aren’t any problems. But my stamina isn’t perfect yet. It hasn’t been that long since I built up my current level of stamina.I am currently working to maintain that level. In order to do well in competition, stamina is important.Since this is my first competition of the season, my goal is to skate calmly.Q: Since you’ve started off the Olympic season, what do you think you need to work on more?▶Kim: Well, having competed in so many competitions I don’t feel as burdened as I used to feel in the past. However, I think it is important to find a way to become even more calmer though experience.Q: It’s been 10 years since you last competed in Croatia.▶Kim: I remember competing in Croatia when I was in middle school.I was a novice then and now I am an old timer headed for retirement. (laughs) So it is quite special.Even though it’s a small competition there will be skaters such as Ando Miki who I have competed with numerous timesand a new star from Russia (Elizaveta Tuktamysheva) so I think I will be able to compete with a bit more tension.Q: How do you feel going into competition?▶Kim: I am a bit worried because it is my first competition of the season. But I will do my best to empty my mind, try not to get to ahead of myself, and skate calmly.Q: Do you have any words of advice for the young Korean skaters(Kim Hae-Jin, Park So-Yeon)who will be going to the Olympics with you?▶Kim: Participating in the Games itself is very meaningful.Since both are young skaters, even just skating at the Olympics will be a meaningful experience for them.Of course it would be great if they have good results. But I wish they can enjoy skating at the Games without being too burdened by expectations. If they do so, good results will naturally follow.
