Kim Yuna withdraws from the Grand Prix series

'Figure Queen' Kim Yuna has withdrawn from the Grand Prix series.

The Korean Skating Union (KSU) announced on Thursday that Kim had withdrawn from both her ISU Grand Prix assignments,

Skate Canada and Trophee Eric Bompard (TEB).

"Kim felt strong pain in her right foot while training and had it checked out recently. The results showed a microdamage to her right metatarsal.

If she was to continue on with the high-intensity training, then the pain will persist and worsen the injury.

Kim needs to reduce the intensity of her training and receive treatment and regular checkups," said a KSU official.

Kim will need treatment for approximately 6 weeks.

But even with a complete recovery, she will need to undergo a period of rehabilitation in order to prevent the injury from recurring.

As a result, Kim has no choice but to sit out on Skate Canada (Oct. 25 - 27 at St. John, Canada) and TEB (Nov. 15 - 17 at Paris, France).

Kim's scheduled return to the Grand Prix circuit, which would have been the first since her last appearance at the series during the 2009-2010 season,

will have to be postponed.

“Intense training is needed to prepare for competitions but it was decided that it would be impossible for Kim to continue on with the kind of training she was doing with her injured foot.

We have notified the ISU of Kim’s withdrawal.

Kim is currently training lightly at the Taereung Skating Rink and is planning to continue with the training on a level that won’t strain her injury,”

said a KSU official.

*Excerpt 2

It was reported that Kim, who was training six to seven hours a day, started feeling pain in her right foot around the end of August.

“When the pain started to get worse, we decided to seek treatment.

With the advice of the doctors that a more thorough management of Yuna's physical condition would be necessary before the Olympics,

Yuna judged it would be best to sit out on the Grand Prix series," said All That Sports, Kim’s management.

“Kim is currently skating and training lightly at a degree to which her foot isn't strained.

She hasn't said anything, but Yuna had been training hard to prepare for the season. If anyone is disappointed by this unexpected turn of events, she is.

But she's showing strong determination to continue preparing for the Olympics while receiving treatment,” said a representive from Kim’s agency.

“Her bones are a bit bruised due to the repetition of all the jumps, but it's not to the extent that she needs surgery or a cast,” said Dr. Na Young-Mu,

Kim’s physician and head of Sol hospital.

Dr. Na estimated that Kim would be able to recover as early as four weeks.

However, since returning to intensive training too early might exacerbate her injury, six weeks of treatment was subscribed to be sure.

Kim is planning to continue to train lightly while receiving treatment.

*Excerpt 3

Dr. Na Young-Mu, Kim’s physician, said Kim is feeling pain in her first metatarsal and in the area between her fourth and fifth metatarsal,

but he also added that it is only a minor injury.

His diagnosis showed a possibility of the treatment taking only 4 weeks, and that Kim would be ready to compete as early as December.

Even today, Kim showed up at the Taereung Ice Rink and trained lightly on the ice.

[Na Young-Mu, Kim’s physician:

For a complete recovery, I would say around early January?

By then, I don't think there would be any problems. December doesn't sound impossible either.]

Experts who have seen her train before the injury all agree that Kim has already adjusted to her new programs.

[Jung Jae-Eun, KSU Figure Skating judge director:

I’ve seen her practice her new programs two times and she was very expressive and at such an ease.

It was as if she had been skating the programs for a whole year.

If Yuna receives thorough rehabilitation treatment, then I don't think there would be any problems in her preparation for the Olympics.]

*Excerpt 4

At first, Kim was planning only to skip Skate Canada.

However, after receiving advice that competing at her remaining assignment (Trophee Eric Bompard) wouldn’t help with managing her physical condition,

she decided to withdraw from both events.
