Kim Yuna’s Interview with KBS2 after National’s free skating

KBS2 | 2013-01-06

Reporter | Korean figure skating fans are truly blessed to have a top skater like Kim Yuna.
Your performance almost brought me to tears. How do you feel about today’s skate?

Kim Yuna | I was quite nervous today. because I made a mistake during my short program yesterday. But once the music started, I was okay. I tried to skate like I do during my run-throughs in practice. And I’m happy that I was able to pull off all of the elements in my program. Oh, I think I got over-excited in the end because I had a clean skate. I actually did by short program spin for my final spin in the free. I had to the free Skating program spin but since I switched them, I think I may have lost a few points there. Anyways, I am happy that I was able to finish my program calmly.

Reporter | You skated clean and scored over 200 points.
This is the first time that the 200 barrier has been broke in a Korean competition; quite a meaningful milestone don’t you think?

Kim Yuna | I failed to store up on points in my short and like I said in my interview after the short program yesterday, I thought I would be difficult to break the 200 point mark. So I am delighted that I was able to perform clean today. As for the matter of scores, every competition is different. If I am able to skate calmly, taking care of each and element on the way, and finish without huge mistakes, I think I can give the audience a good performance.

Reporter | You competed with a lot of young skaters who are improving daily as well. Do you have any words of advice for them?

Kim Yuna | I train with them at the Taereung ice rink and at times I feel sorry for them because of the grueling training. A lot of times I want to help but since I have my own training that I need to focus on, I can’t lend a helping hand as much as I want to. We will continue to share the same ice so I hope that we can get courage and strength from each other. We can also stay motivated by training together as well. All the junior skaters are doing so well right now so my words of advice would be to not get injured. It is important that junior skaters, and senior skaters as well, to be careful of injuries. Don’t try to get overly greedy. Climbing each step one at a time and diligent hard work is the key.

Reporter | By winning gold in this competition you have earn your ticket to the World Championships. What are your goals for Worlds?

Kim Yuna | My goal, the World Championships is just around the corner. Still there is quite some time left until Worlds so my hope is to keep up my current physical condition, not get injured, and put on a good performance.

Reporter | You have indeed seen the return of the figure skating queen today. Thank you Yuna for participating in this interview.
