Kim Yuna is answering questions at the press conference held before the closing ceremony of the PyeongChang Winter Special Olympics.

The former and current figure skating queens, Michelle Kwan and Kim Yuna explained why they decided to perform to the song ‘Hero’ at the closing ceremony of the PyeongChang Winter Special Olympics.

“Each and every athlete who participated in the Games is a hero, and we wanted our performance to be a gift for all of the Special Olympics heroes,” they said at the press conference held at the YongPyeong Dome in PyeongChang, Gangwon Province, which was also the venue for the closing ceremonies.

Kim and Kwan performed their duet ‘Hero’ number at a skating show in July, 2010.

However, both ‘queens’ explained that today’s performance would be quite different from their previous number.

“Two years ago, when I skated with Michelle Kwan, it was to honor her because she was my hero. But this time it is to honor all the athletes who participated in the Special Olympics, that they are all heroes,” said Kim.

“The performance is to thank all the Special Olympics athletes who have moved the hearts of so many people during past eight days,” added Kim.

“All of the Special Olympics athletes are champions. I got married two weeks ago but I went on a short honeymoon in order to be here at the Games,” said Kwan as she laughed.

“I would like to thank Korea for not only inviting me to perform at the closing ceremony, but also hosting the event itself. The Special Olympics will leave a great legacy to Korea,” said Kwan.

A Special Olympics athlete, who considers Kim and Kwan as her heroes, was also present at the conference, making it much more special.

“I am at a loss for words. I am going to skate with both of my heroes here. All of the people I met during the Games were so kind and now I get to leave with great memories,” said Jessica Young, a member of the Canadian team who won the silver medal in the Pairs Level 2 event.

After Kim and Kwan’s duet, eighteen Special Olympics figure skating athletes will join them on the ice and will do a group number.

“We will be dancing with the athletes. I had a really great time practicing this group number with all of the athletes,” said Kim as she smiled.
