‘Figure Queen’ Kim Yuna ended her 20 month hiatus with a successful comeback performance.

Kim later said that she “was tense while skating,” and finally smiled a smile of relief.

Kim answered questions about her performance during a press conference held after the NRW Trophy ladies’ short program at the Eissportzenturm in Dortmund, Germany.

“At first I was feeling more expectant than nervous about returning to competition. And since the competition was a small one, I didn’t feel much pressure. I was feeling the same at morning practice. However during the warm-up, just before performing, I started to get tense and remained so till the end of my program.”

“Even my legs were shaking,” Kim admitted laughing.

However Kim said that she tried her best to perform with confidence and that she was satisfied with the results.

“Even though I was nervous I tried to tackle all of my elements calmly and confidently because I knew that I had done all of this in practice. There was a slight ‘Oops’ moment but overall, it was a satisfactory performance.”

“My goal was to get a score that was higher than the minimum required technical score. So since I have achieved half of my goal, I think it was a pretty good result.”

But considering the fact that Kim’s short program score of 72.27 is the highest ladies score of the season, she did not merely obtain her goal, she did so spectacularly.

“I thought that if I did a ‘clean program’ without making mistakes, I would get a good score. But because there is no way of knowing what mistakes one will make under the influence of nerves, I didn’t expect such high scores,” said Kim.

“I was focused on the technical score rather than the total score, so I kept on reminding myself not to make mistakes.”

The short program was also an opportunity to check out how prepared Kim was for this season.

Kim mentioned in previous interviews that she was concerned most about her stamina and that was the main focus of her training. “Even though I have a tendency to get a bit out of breath when I am nervous, my basic level of endurance is more than enough. Since I have trained hard, I am confident that I can deliver my free program as well,” said Kim

When asked about her new spins, Kim said that “the spins were still green because there were spins that were novel to me in the short program.” She added that “since this is my first competition of this season, I will polish my spins after studying my performance.”

Kim’s short program was to the soundtrack of ‘The Kiss of the Vampire’. She explained that many people would have thought that the program was “not as intense as expected” because she is “portraying the female victim, rather than the vampire.”

“I tried to express the conflicting emotions of the heroine though the choreography and music. She is trying to deny the temptation yet at the same time becoming more and more attracted,” Kim described.

“I hardly remember how I skated because it was my first competition. I think I need more time to be relaxed enough to have the calmness to better express the program,” said Kim as she laughed.

“I think I successfully overcame my first obstacle. If I skate a free skate with confidence, a light heart, and do it like I do in practice, I don’t think I will have a big problem,” said Kim.
