‘Figure Queen’ Kim Yuna earned a total score of 201.61 at the NRW Trophy, which was her first competition after a long hiatus. Kim said that she didn’t expect to get such good scores.

“I skipped out on a season and it was my first competition after a long break so I did not expect at all to get over 200 points,” said Kim in a press conference held after the NRW Trophy ladies’ free skate at the Eissportzenturm in Dortmund, Germany.

“I know that people had high expectations (of breaking the 200 mark) but I didn’t think that was possible. I’m happy to have received such a high unexpected score. My goal for this competition was to exceed the minimum required technical scores. So I am satisfied that I have achieved it,” said Kim.

“I executed clean jumps in the first half of my program and I stumbled a bit after my first mistake. However I am glad that I finished my performance without big mistakes. I am satisfied that I I had the chance to show the audience that I trained hard,” added Kim.

Kim stumbled on two jumping passes during her free skate, which is not like her.

“I lost my balance during my first mistake: the double axel - double toe loop - double loop combination jump. I think I lost my concentration a bit on my second mistake,” said Kim.

Kim stated that the mistakes were not due to lack of stamina and that “since this was my first competition, I think that it will help me focus more in future competitions.”

There had been some concern over her Kim’s endurance up until the competition. However Kim stated that “even though it is true that stamina was the thing I worried about the most, I have trained hard and have brought my endurance up to a level where I can handle the free skate sufficiently.”

Explaining about her free program ‘Les Miserables’, Kim said that the program “focuses on the vulnerable woman: whose theme song accounts for over half of the total program.” “I think I was more focused on executing the technical elements because it was my first competition. So I might have been less focused on the artistic side of the program,” said Kim.

Kim’s next goal is to compete at the World Championships that will be held next year.

“Since I have qualified for the World Championships, I need to start preparing for it when I go back to Korea. The tickets for the next Olympic Games will be determined by this season’s Worlds and I need to work hard so that other young Korean skaters can skate at the Olympics,” said Kim.

When asked about participating in the Korean Nationals after being absent from it for a long time, she resolved that she would “work hard to get into better shape” because it has been a long time since she has competed in Korea. “I will try to deliver a good performance fueled by the support of the fans,” said Kim.
