There is no one like ‘Figure Queen’ Kim Yuna

There is a star that shines out during every special event of the 2013 PyeongChang Special Olympics.

Who is it? It’s ‘Figure Queen’ Kim Yuna.

Kim participated in the ‘Special Olympics D-100 Walk’ that was held at the Cheonggye square, Seoul on the 21st.

She walked with the 2013 participants of the walk and held an autograph signing session before the walk.

Kim was the star of the event. The autograph event started at 2 P.M. but people swarmed to the event, much more than initially expected.

People waited in line, enduring the strong afternoon rays for a long time to get Kim’s autographs.

“If I don’t get to see her after waiting so long in line, I might cry,” said a high school girl who started to scream in excitement when Kim appeared.

There were so many people that the event organizers had to limit the number of autographs to fifty.

“I hope that the public interest in people with intellectual disabilities will increase,” said Kim.

Kim is an honorary ambassador of the PyeongChang Special Olympics.

She is currently training daily at the Taereung Training Center for a competition in December

but in spite of her busy schedule she always finds time to attend Special Olympics events, whether they are big or small.

In a press conference held in July, Kim said that there was a possibility

that she may skate with Michelle Kwan at the opening ceremony of the PyeongChang Special Olympic Games next year,

a remark that attracted the interest of the foreign media.

The Special Olympics is still an unfamiliar term to even avid sports fans.

However, thanks to honorary ambassador, Kim Yuna, the Games are getting much more attention.

The 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games will be held in PyeongChang and Gangneung, Gangwon province from January 29 to February 5.

In July an official from the Special Olympics committee expressed her gratitude on Twitter and the tweet caught the interest of many Koreans.

“There is no one like Kim Yuna. She regularly participates in events with no quid pro quo and without ulterior motives despite her busy schedule.

Her passion for the Games, her love for the intellectually disabled is truly admirable. The Games shine more brightly thanks to Yuna.”

Kim is expected to reveal her new coach and the name of the international competition she will be competing in at the end of October.

Yuna’s congratulatory speech for the ‘PyeongChang Special Olympics D-100 Walk’ (from 00:56~01:55)

“Hello everyone!

I’m Kim Yuna and I am an honorary ambassador for the Special Olympic Games.

The PyeongChang Special Olympics is just around the corner, only 100 days left till the Games begin.

Before we know it, the opening ceremonies will start.

I am so proud and happy that such a meaningful event will be held in our country, in Pyeongchang.

I was appointed as an honorary ambassador for the Games in August last year.

I hope that I have been of some help, spreading the meaning of the Special Olympics.

The walk will have participants from all walks of life, disabled and non-disabled alike.

I hope that the walk will help us become one and understand each other, as we walk together, share our laughter and open our hearts.

Also, I hope that all the participants of the race will have a great time without anyone getting injured.

Please support the 2013 PyeongChang Special Olympics so that it can be a success.

And I hope everyone will give a big round of applause for the athletes who are training hard for the Games.”

A member of Fevers, who participated in the walk, decided to give Yuna a present.

She wanted to express her admiration for Yuna for doing good, always  participating in charitable works.

She decided that she would make a “Creative Tumbler” for Yuna to make use of her experience as a former Starbucks barista.

What is a “Creative Tumbler”?

Well, you can make your own skin designs and insert it in to make a one-of-a-kind tumbler.

I wanted to make a really creative tumbler so I agonized over the design for over 9 months.

And here is the final result!

Custom-made design!

Tailor-made skin!

Everyone knows the famous siren logo of Starbucks.

So I decided to a parody of it.

I changed the siren’s face to Yuna’s face.

Then I changed the fish tails into figure skates.

Like this!

I’ll channel my inner-Vouge…

“With the refreshing vivid green color preserving the classiness of the original, the gorgeous face is simple and sets off the illustration.

The toe of the edge gives off an edgy flair, and the two skates located on the sides of the siren is the focus of the look.”

After finishing these tumblers and I was able to deliver them at the autograph event.

I was able to be one of the lucky fifty people who were allowed to get autographs.

The following is the story.

Me (a Fevers member): Hello!

Yuna: Hi!

Me: I made a tumbler just for unni*! (fumbles to find the tumbler)

Ta da!

Yuna: (Laughs and examines the tumbler with both hands)

Me: This is unni’s face and these are skates. I drew them myself to give these to unni. (becomes elated)

Yuna: Wow!

Me: This one is stainless steel and other is plastic. Which one do you like better?

Yuna: (without hesitation grabs the stainless steel one gracefully) This one.

(then gives me a slight wink that was so cute and charming!)

Me: Oh! I guess stainless steel is better to carry hot liquid and is better for the body too :)

Yuna: Thank you very much!! :)

Me: Is training going smoothly these days?

Yuna: Yes! (energetically)

Me: Please take care not to get sick or hurt…Fighting* (Good Luck)!

Yuna: (nods)

Me: Thank you so much!

Yuna: (waves goodbye)

I am literally walking on air right now….

Since the autograph event was only open to those who were participating in the D-100 walk,

our member (the writer of the episode) had to take part in the walk.

Even though her bags were heavy and she didn’t much sleep the night before,

she resolved, “That doesn’t matter! This is a promise between Yuna unni and me so I will complete the walk!!”

and finished the walk! Hurray!

The 2013 participants, including citizens, celebrities and sport stars started the walk that began at the Cheonggye stream

and walked the course that was 3 kilometers long, together.

After crossing the finish line, participants received a stamp on the hand and a bottle of xylitol gum.

Our member says that she barely made it home because she was so drained out.

But she ended her post with “I still feel like I’m dreaming. I love you Queen Yuna !”

Thank you for sharing your story with us!
