“I’m practicing my hand gestures, eye contact, facial expressions, and movements.”

‘Figure Queen’ Yuna Kim is working hard for the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympic bid.
Kim is currently in Durban, South Africa, where the 2011 International Olympic Committee (IOC) session will be held.
Kim is practicing hard for her final presentation which will be final chance to appeal for the support of the IOC officials.

It is a rare thing for Kim to get nervous. She skated off with the gold medal at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, the biggest competition, with a flawless skate.
However the final presentation before the decision of the 2018 Winter Olympic host city was enough to rattle her nerves of steel.

Kim arrived in Durban on June 30, before the official Pyeongchang delegation arrived.
The next day after she arrived (July 1), she began to practice for her presentation, practicing 2 hours each day.
She also participated in the rehearsal that was held at the Durban ICC center on July 3. The rehearsal was attended by IOC officials and lasted for 4 hours.

“It really didn’t sink in that ‘decision day’ was approaching. But now that I have arrived in Durban I’m starting to get nervous.
I’m checking my eye contact and stuff like that so that I can do my presentation without any mistakes like I did in Lausanne.
Since I’m presenting in English, I am practicing over and over even at the hotel, so that it comes out naturally,” said Kim in a press interview that was held on July 2.

Kim is being tutored by a professional consultant and by Na Seung-Yeon, spokesperson of the Pyeongchang team, for her presentation.
Kim has already presented twice, at the IOC technical briefing for the bidding cities that was held in Lausanne, Switzerland in May,
and at the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) general assembly that was held in Lome, Togo on June 28.
She received good reactions but she wants to be especially perfect this time since the Durban presentation is the final chance to appeal for the support of the IOC officials.

Nicolas Sarkozy, the president of France announced on July 1, that he would not be attending the Durban IOC session.
This makes it a bit easier for the other two bidding cities, Pyeongchang and Munich.
Experts predict that the final presentation will decide the winning city.

The Pyeongchang bid committee regard Kim as their ‘hidden card’ and hopes that she will be able to move the hearts of the IOC officials.
The committee has not released the contents of their presentation but Kim’s story in itself is very convincing;
born in a country where figure skating was almost non-existent yet grew up dreaming of the Olympics, and finally with her endless hard work became a worldwide athlete and achieved that dream.
